NCSCE and KQED are partnering on Do Now U, a project that engages undergraduate students in online discussions through social media about current scientific issues.
This week’s Do Now U asks, “Should You Give Up Caffeine?” The post, written by Logan Carter and Allison Robinson, Kira Hamman’s students at Pennsylvania State University, Mont Alto, presents the benefits and risks of caffeine consumption.
Studies show that caffeine has cognitive benefits and can reduce risk of gallstones and Parkinson’s disease, but may also increase risk of coronary heart disease and hypertension. If you are one of the 80% of adults in the U.S. with a daily caffeine habit, will you be giving up caffeine, or do the benefits to you outweigh the risks?
